Big day after only getting to bed after 12 last night with the travel. Awoken at 4:50 by the call to prayer from the local mosque. Visited 6 Lutheran schools , 3 Lutheran Synod offices of their bishops, and the office of Lutheran World Federation in Siantar. Lunch was as expected I suppose... check the picture: barbecued fish, fish stew, pork, rice and to help it some bok Choi type stuff and chilli sauces... one a sambel and the other a chilli and ginger thing... plus coriander was in there somewhere. I had to have a good helping of chilli to eat it, which I will pay for no doubt. Heading out to dinner tonight.. it’s a high percentage Muslim community, so have not seen a pub, bar or bottle shop. New experiences for Anthony!!
Met today with the Director of Diokonia in one of the church synods (HKPB), discussing needs, support and future dreams. We met at her home which is part of a big church complex that includes chapel, orphanage, church offices and more. Following this we travelled through the country to Raya and a secondary boarding school there. They have a partnership with Navigator College Port Lincoln. After lunch there, similar to yesterday, we travelled back to Siantor to meet, debrief on the two days of meeting and endeavour to consider what’s next in the way the LCA can support Indo Lutheran Schools.
Travelled from Siantar to Kualanuma. Very plush hotel this evening ready for big travel day tomorrow. Took airport train into centre of Medan for a brief look around. Typical busy Asian city. Pictures are of trip to Medan, view from hotel (Prime Plaza Hotel) , and downtown Medan
It was going to be big challenge anyway but It’s a bit of a shemozzle.... Hmmm In Manila, but luggage is somewhere else in Asia. Not even halfway to Lae Grrrrr Manila airport is aged and very inefficient. Sitting outside waiting for transfer to another terminal. That will only come every 45 minutes...
Got to Lae, with the Church compound at Ampo being 80 minutes from the airport. Hot sunny day. Guesthouse accom is basic but ok. Interestingly no hot water hooked up as it is always it. Went to shop to try to find some clothes as luggage nowhere to be found. I couldn’t find anything big enough🙄.
Martin Luther Seminary is 5 minutes up the road and we went there this morning for chapel and also for the commissioning of Mick Hauser who was bestowed with a preaching license for LCA & ELC-PNG. Nice little service in the chapel at MLS. Education meetings in afternoon to explore partnership possibilities.
Headed out at 7:45. First visit to Bumayong Secondary. They have huge plans.Time is a big issues in PNG. We are 90 minutes late after on visited 5 more schools. Quick trips, but when we got to speak with students and staff that was best. They are big on ceremony and speeches. 💤 However, a couple of the traditional welcomes were special. Some pictures of local area mixed in, taken as we drove from school to school.
After a quick trip to the pharmacy, we had meetings morning, afternoon and dinner (moo moo, variation on hungi) at night. Great tropical flowers. Lot of talk at meetings, not sure about action. Statue of ML in middle of compound.
Meetings in morning with Lutheran Education Department Secretary and then ELC Church Secretary to try to debrief, summarise and determine next steps. Meetings went ok. Mick Hauser picked us up and took us for a brief drive around Lae, down to Markham River and bridge(pictured). Potholes like you have never seen. Big as a car and up to 80 cm deep. Amazing!Interesting sites along the way of houses and villages hidden in bush. Lunch at Lae Yacht Club with Mick then back to guesthouse. Quiet afternoon and evening ready for travel home tomorrow.
